Plastering over Artex Ceilings
Call today if you require a plasterer in Bristol to plaster over Artex.
What is Artex?
Artex is a textured coating that was used extensively from the 70's - 90's. Mainly used on ceilings but was also used on walls!
Asbestos in Artex
Artex in houses built before 2000 may contain Asbestos, a test maybe required. Artex should not be scraped back or sanded unless tested for Asbestos first.
Plastering over Artex
Artex due to its strength was often used to cover ceilings in poor condition.
Plastering directly over Artex that is covering a ceiling in poor condition e.g a cracked lath and plaster ceiling could cause further issues. For example an increased risk of cracking and bulging, or collapse due to the added weight.
Artex can also hide issues with modern plasterboard ceilings. One example is plasterboard ceilings that are fixed with nails. The nails can work loose over time ‘popping’ the plaster. Nailed plasterboard joints can also crack where there is movement and insufficient taping.
It is also important to check how well the existing Artex is bonded to the ceiling. Plastering over poorly bonded coatings can result in plaster delamination.
Our advice would always be to plasterboard over the top of Artex ceilings as it ensures a good substrate for a long lasting plaster finish.
